The course also covers a technical study of Dāwūd al-Qayṣarī’s masterpiece known as the Muqaddima, which provides a rational and philosophical prolegomenon to the thought of Muḥyī l-Dīn Ibn ʿArabī and the school that subsequently developed around his thought known as the School of the Unity of Existence.

Advanced Legal Theory
Watch NowLegal theory, or uṣūl al-fiqh, provides a general framework or methodology for the process of inferring Sharia rulings. It deals with the evidences that can be utilised and the linguistic and hermeneutical principles for interpreting the Qur’an and sunna. Students will engage in close reading of Muḥammad Riḍā al-Muẓaffar’s uṣūl al-fiqh. The course covers linguistic discussions, rational discussions, authority of evidence and procedural principles.

Introduction to Muslim Philosophy
Watch NowPhilosophy, also known as ḥikma or ‘wisdom,’ is the systematic attempt to understand reality through a process of rational reflection and deduction. This module provides students with a historical background of the origins and development of philosophy in the Islamic world, central philosophical themes, and the prominent philosophers. It examines the impact that the translation of Greek philosophical texts into the Arabic language had on the development of philosophical ideas amongst Muslims.

Ḥadīth & Rijāl Studies
Watch NowThis module familiarises students with the science of ḥadith (narration) criticism and authentication, tracing the history of recording hadith all the way to the phenomenon of fabrication, and classification of different ḥadith. It also introduces them toʿIlm al-Rijāl (biographical studies) which investigates the status of narrators of hadith, how scholars go about grading reporters, and their bearing on the credibility of it.

Pre-Islamic History and History of Prophet Mohammad
Watch NowThis module critically examines the context in which Islam emerged and the impact that the development of the religion had on the Arabian Peninsula. It evaluates the economic, socio-political and moral norms in pre-Islamic Arabia, known as the period of Jāhiliyya, and thereafter provides a detailed study of the pivotal social and spiritual events during the lifetime of Prophet Mohammad. Students will gain an appreciation of the sources, methodology and approaches to the study of Islamic history.
