Watch NowThis course undertakes a comprehensive study into the transcendental philosophy of Mulla Ṣadra, through a close reading of ʿAllāma al-Ṭabāṭabāʾī’s masterpiece, Bidāyat al-ḥikma. It situates the philosophy of Mulla Ṣadra in the broader history of Islamic philosophy, exposing students to previous philosophers, and covers discussions on the reality of existence and nature of the necessary being.

Advanced Logic
Watch NowThis course provides students with a complete overview of classical logic, the science of correct thinking. Students are introduced to some of the rudimentary building blocks of classical logical theory, including concepts, the theory of definitions, and the five universals using Shaykh Muḥammad Riḍā al-Muẓaffar’s textbook al-Manṭiq. In the latter modules students embark on a detailed study of syllogistic reasoning in which they investigate syllogisms from both their formal and material aspects culminating in the study of the so-called “Five Arts” – demonstration, dialectic, rhetoric, poetry and sophistic.

Introduction to Muslim Theology & Shi’i Belief

This module introduces students to the historical debates surrounding predestination and the nature of God which led to the development of the discipline. It then examines the rational justifications provided for classical Shi’i doctrines by ʿAllāma Ḥillī in his work Bāb Hādī ʿAshar.

Introduction to Muslim Mysticism
Watch NowIslamic mysticism (ʿirfān) relies primarily on experiential knowledge to provide an understanding of God, the universe and the human being; and the relationship between them. This module introduces students to key historical figures and themes within the study of Islamic mysticism, familiarising them with not only the key concepts within the Islamic mystical discourse but also the foundational texts of Islamic spirituality as well as the different literary modes of expressing spiritual sentiment such as in poetry and art.
