Islamic law, or jurisprudence (fiqh), is the process of inferring Sharia rulings from their sources. Students will be acquainted with the technical terminology of fiqh and learn how principles discussed in uṣūl al-fiqh are applied in fiqh. Through close textual reading of Shaykh Bāqir al-Irwānī’s Al-Fiqh al-Istidlālī, students will engage in a detailed study of the laws, the juristic method of extrapolating them, and the critical analysis of the juristic procedure and its ensuing rulings. Advanced modules cover juristic evidence for derivation (ijtihād) and emulation (taqlīd), and selected reading from Shaykh al-Anṣārī’s Makāsib.
